ABOUT

In the Department of Art Education, students pursue highly diversified studies into the educational significance of art and the aesthetic formation of human character, engaging in both creative activity to mobilize their practical skills and research rooted in theoretical thinking.

In practical creative endeavors, students expand their horizons in an expansive range of artistic areas, striving to heighten the caliber of their specialized skills as purveyors of expression. They likewise inquire the essential significance of art in the formation of human thought, development and other aspects at the source of expression. They devote themselves to studies designed to theoretically deepen the discovery and the experience gained from their own works.

On the creative side, the Department maintains a broad view that extends to interdisciplinary links with other fields. On the theoretical research front as well, in addition to theories of creation and education, collaborations are actively engineered with artistic anatomy, graphic or color science and other fields involving the fundamentals of art, as well as with other disciplines linked to the basics of human life. This is all part of the Department ’s integrated quest to lay the groundwork for higher quality of art education for many years to come.

The Department of Art Education was founded in 1963 as an independent course within the university ’s graduate school. Over the past half century, the Department has graduated a steady stream of outstanding individuals.

We look forward to the shining exploits of the graduates of this department across an impressive range of artistic and educational domains in the future.

Interview with a Master’s Degree Graduate of 2022 Akane Hosaka

  1.  Why did you choose to study in the Department of Art Education ?
Even before being admitted to the university, I had already decided to study in the department. In the beginning, during my bachelor’s program, I devoted myself to studying crafts in order to gain a better understanding of art. However, I found myself increasingly intrigued by the Department of Art Education, which had a strong connection to society. Also, the influence of an art school teacher who had graduated from the Department of Art Education fueled my determination

  2. How was your campus life during the two years of master’s program ?
In the department of art education, I had many opportunities to engage my senses in various ways. Within the same studio, there were graduates working with oil paints and creating artwork by embroidering photographs, which allowed me to acquire knowledge outside my specialized field. Additionally, I had the privilege of deepening my techniques in ceramics by exchanging insights with students from the ceramics department. Balancing paper writing and art production was very challenging, but it taught me the importance and difficulty of expressing sensory experiences in words. Through exchanging opinions, I discovered what truly mattered to me. This realization filled me with genuine gratitude for having chosen to pursue this path.

  3. Plans after graduation
While continuing my work as a potter, my goal is to collaborate with others in exploring the world of creation and fostering an environment that embraces art and craftsmanship. Having grown up in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, I will soon begin my role as a member of the local community revitalization support team in my hometown. I am dedicated to actively promoting art and art education, as well as providing support for diverse artistic activities within the community. Additionally, I eagerly anticipate engaging in workshops and other artistic endeavors in the future, as they will afford me opportunities to broaden my knowledge and deepen my understanding of the arts.

  4. Messages to prospective students

I went through a period of uncertainty about whether to continue my artistic pursuits, but now I am determined to keep creating. I believe the art education department has three advantages. Firstly, it provides an opportunity to build friendships where diverse concerns can be shared. Secondly, it allows for a broader perspective and self-reflection on one’s own specialization. Lastly, it offers deeper understanding of your field of arts through the process of writing research papers. I encourage you to engage with a wide range of people and discover the art you wish to communicate.
